Introducing Playground: Create and play custom games

Collected Oct 7, 2026

Google introduced Playground, an experimental gaming platform from software engineer Maryam Karimzadehgan, available starting today for users in the U.S. who are 18 or older at playground.google. It lets people build, play and share custom games through text prompts with no coding experience required.

Creation happens through a conversational interface: users start from a blank canvas, remix starter prompts or use guided support, then can adjust physics, rules, characters or environments by asking. Games are browser-based and playable on phone or laptop. Creators can keep games private, share a link, or publish to the Playground Explore gallery, which uses player ratings and play activity to surface titles. Multiplayer and in-game leaderboards work in select genres, and a Play Games profile lets players claim a custom handle, like games and follow creators.

Every published game goes through safety screenings aligned with Community Guidelines, and user reporting is available. Creation access is tiered, rolling out based on a user's Google AI subscription.

A future integration with Unity Spark is planned for dedicated creators, adding professional-level mechanics, high-fidelity 3D and the Unity runtime. Unity Spark is in testing, with a closed beta coming soon; demo games are on playground.google and details at unity.com/spark.

Why it matters: Game creation that previously required technical knowledge of complex engines is now open to non-coders via prompts in a browser, though the U.S.-only, 18-plus launch and subscription-based tiering limit who can create games immediately. Published games are subject to safety screening and reporting.
