Most Americans want AI development to slow down or stop entirely, new poll finds

Collected Oct 5, 2026

A Quinnipiac University poll found that most Americans want AI development to slow down or stop until its safety has been verified. In the survey, 47 percent of respondents said they want to reduce the pace of development, while 30 percent said they want a full stop. Only five percent said they want development to proceed faster.

The poll also found that 86 percent of respondents support independent safety standards currently under debate for AI companies, even if those standards slow progress. Seventy-three percent said they worry that AI could eventually threaten humanity's survival, and 74 percent said they have little or no trust in the leaders of AI companies.

"Taken together, these results suggest that the public wants safeguards that do not depend simply on taking company leaders at their word," said Chetan Jaiswal of Quinnipiac University.

The poll surveyed 1,202 US adults from September 24 to 27, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. Respondents who want to slow down or stop development together made up 77 percent of those surveyed.
