SpaceXAI backs Omarchy, the controversial Linux distro, with $1.5 million in compute

SpaceXAI is joining the Omacom Foundation, the organization that oversees the Omarchy Linux distribution, as a Founding Corporate Patron, and is donating $1.5 million worth of Grok tokens to the project. David Heinemeier Hansson, who leads Omarchy, announced the partnership in a blog post.

According to that post, the donated tokens will primarily be used to accelerate development, review code and patch bugs. Hansson is the Danish entrepreneur known for creating the Ruby on Rails web framework and for co-founding the company behind Basecamp. The Verge notes he is also becoming known for promoting anti-immigration views, and describes Omarchy as controversial.

Grok tokens are units of access to SpaceXAI's Grok model, so the contribution is compute capacity that will be directed at software work rather than a cash grant. The Omacom Foundation is the body that oversees Omarchy, and SpaceXAI's role is being framed as a founding corporate patron, a designation tied to the foundation's early backing.

The announcement was made today through Hansson's blog post about the partnership. The Verge's coverage notes that if Elon Musk and SpaceXAI were going to back any Linux distribution, Omarchy would seem the obvious choice.
