Introducing Claude Haiku 5.5 on AWS

Collected Oct 7, 2026

AWS announced that Claude Haiku 5.5 is available today on Amazon Bedrock and on Claude Platform on AWS. According to Anthropic, it is the fastest and most efficient model in the Claude 5.5 family and is built for subagents and high-volume, cost-sensitive work. Anthropic says it costs roughly 75 percent less than Claude Haiku 4.5 for most tasks.

On Amazon Bedrock, Haiku 5.5 runs while keeping data within AWS infrastructure with Regional data residency, and it works with existing AWS controls: AWS Identity and Access Management for access, AWS CloudTrail for audit, Amazon CloudWatch for monitoring, and Amazon Bedrock Guardrails. Usage appears on the AWS bill. Claude Platform on AWS provides access to Anthropic's native platform experience through the AWS Management Console, with what AWS describes as the same APIs, features and console experience as working with Anthropic directly, unified with AWS billing and authentication.

Anthropic calls Haiku 5.5 its most capable Haiku model, covering coding, tool use, computer use and agentic tasks. It is the first Haiku model with effort controls, which let teams tune cost against intelligence per task rather than setting one option for an entire workload. AWS lists uses including routing requests as a subagent, reviewing code, classifying long documents, extracting information from small-to-medium documents, initial scans, quick knowledge-base questions, simple conversations, and traditional NLP tasks such as classification, summarization and text generation. It handles agentic coding and multi-step tool use and supports high-resolution images.

Haiku 5.5 is positioned to pair with the recently announced Claude Opus 5.5: Opus 5.5 plans work and handles the hardest reasoning, while Haiku 5.5 runs the fast layer of subagents and review checks. Developers can try it in the Amazon Bedrock console under Test, then Playground, or call it programmatically with the Anthropic Messages API against bedrock-runtime through the Anthropic SDK, or the Invoke and Converse APIs via the AWS CLI and AWS SDK. Model identifiers include global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5.

Prerequisites are an active AWS account with Bedrock access, a configured AWS CLI, Python 3.10+, boto3, the Anthropic SDK, and the Amazon Bedrock Token Generator, plus IAM permissions for bedrock:InvokeModel and bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream. The model is available through the US, EU, AU, JP and Global Geo CRIS inference profiles on bedrock-runtime; in AWS GovCloud (US) it is available on the bedrock-runtime and bedrock-mantle endpoints, and through Claude Platform on AWS in North America.

Why it matters: Teams already using Bedrock can add Haiku 5.5 through existing IAM, CloudTrail, CloudWatch and Guardrails controls, with usage on their AWS bill. The roughly 75 percent lower cost versus Haiku 4.5 and the new effort controls let developers run many Haiku subagents in parallel while reserving Opus 5.5 for harder reasoning.
