Hot Girl Hotline is like ‘Dear Abby’ for the AI era

Two sisters, Balia Mudgil and Sumrin ("Sumi") Mudgil, have launched Hot Girl Hotline, a startup that uses AI to offer young women personalized dating and relationship advice. Balia previously worked as a social media consultant, and Sumi studied computer science at Stanford.
Balia said the startup is not trying to build an AI companion. She described a companion as targeting loneliness, escapism and boredom, and said users can develop emotional dependency on such products. Balia said Hot Girl Hotline instead focuses on advice grounded in behavioral science and aims to feel like chatting with a trusted friend or big sister. The conversation is often Socratic, with the AI asking questions to help users reach answers themselves.
Balia said the service is not a replacement for speaking to a human and is not clinical advice, and that safeguards are in place. If conversations raise flags, she said, the user is referred to resources such as the crisis hotline 988. Sumi said quality advice involves not just knowing what to do next but understanding why.
The AI also knows when to end a conversation, according to the report, rather than asking follow-up questions that prolong it, and pushes users toward real-world action instead of rumination. The app personalizes advice to reflect each user's values, goals, identity and tastes.
The startup uses a mix of AI models and encrypts user data in transit and at rest. It says it does not sell or train on the data, and when using a third-party AI model it follows a zero-data-retention policy there as well.
Hot Girl Hotline plans to monetize through a $9.99 per month subscription, which hundreds of its most active users already pay for, and may later incorporate ads. It plans to expand beyond relationship advice into areas such as beauty and lifestyle.
The New York-based company is currently bootstrapped and will participate in TechCrunch Disrupt's upcoming Startup Battlefield 200. It is available on iOS and the web.
