GLM-5.2 is the step change for open agents

Z.ai released GLM-5.2 on Saturday, June 13, 2026, rolling it out first to GLM Coding Plan members, according to a report by Nathan Lambert in Interconnects published June 22, 2026. The official MIT-licensed model weights and release blog followed three days later, on June 16.
The rollout came about a week after the export restriction and effective banning of Claude Fable 5. Lambert wrote that Z.ai appeared to capitalize on the "Anthropic being anti open-science" discussion, and that Chinese open-weight labs have taken such marketing opportunities over the past year or two.
GLM-5.2 looked like an incremental update to GLM-5.1 under common industry naming, Lambert wrote. He described the model as one of several Z.ai recommends running at Max thinking effort, and noted Z.ai uses the SLIME reinforcement learning framework.
According to the report, community benchmarks after June 16 showed better-than-expected results. Arena's agent leaderboard placed GLM-5.2 as the only open model mixing with OpenAI and Anthropic's latest models, notably matching Opus 4.8's no-thinking effort against GLM-5.2's max mode. Design Arena, described as having mixed community perception, had GLM-5.2 besting Claude Fable.
Lambert wrote that praise from the AI commentariat and researcher class was exceeded in clarity only by DeepSeek R1's release, and that GLM-5.2 exceeded Kimi K2's "DeepSeek Moment." He said GLM-5.2 is the first open-weight model that feels right in coding harnesses as a general agent. Testing it through Fireworks' API in Claude Code, he encountered an issue where the harness or repo documentation sent images to the model, breaking the Fireworks API for the session and forcing a manual context clear.
The report cites the Z.ai founder telling Elon that "open-weight Fable capabilities will be here sooner than Q1 2027," and Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch saying he was "Genuinely impressed, almost shocked, at how good GLM-5.2 by @zai_org is at coding. This changes things."
Lambert measured the gap between Claude Opus 4.5's November 24, 2025 release and GLM-5.2's June 16, 2026 release at 204 days, about 6.8 months, placing it in the claimed 6-9 month lag between U.S. closed labs and Chinese open counterparts. He wrote the release could create pricing pressure on organizations and benefit open-model inference and finetuning providers including Fireworks, Together, Thinky via Tinker, and Prime Intellect.
