iOS 27.0.1 released: Apple fixes annoying iPhone 18 Pro restart and freezing issues

Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, the first update to iOS 27, to fix an intermittent problem that could cause the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max to freeze or restart without warning. Released Monday, the update is intended to resolve the freeze and restart issue, which typically occurs when Face ID fails to authenticate, according to ZDNET.
The update also resolves a glitch in which a color artifact would appear on photos taken at 2x under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48. Apple said in its release notes that this occurred on a small number of 18 Pro and Pro Max phones.
A third fixed bug applies more broadly: opening the Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously may cause the screen to become unresponsive. As a result, iOS 27.0.1 is available for all iPhones running iOS 27.
iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS have also received their first updates, version 27.0.1. Apple said those updates provide bug fixes but did not specify what they fixed. Apple's security release page did not list any security patches for the updates, which appear to be regular bug-fixing releases. Apple said the update is aimed at the iPhone 11 and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 4th generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Air 4th generation and later, iPad 9th generation and later, and iPad mini 6th generation and later.
Apple did not share details about the nature of the Face ID restart glitch. Based on research from 9to5Mac, the problem appears when using Face ID to unlock certain apps and features, including the Passwords app and private tabs in Safari. If Face ID authentication fails initially, tapping "Try Face ID Again" in the alert causes affected iPhones to lock up and restart after a few seconds, 9to5Mac explained.
According to the report, the issue may relate to the placement of the facial recognition sensor. On prior models such as the iPhone 17 and 16, the Face ID camera is on the Dynamic Island; on the iPhone 18 models, it is under the display, to the left of the Dynamic Island. Last week, Apple released watchOS 27.0.1 to fix a bug in which the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 would randomly restart.
