How Credit Genie keeps codebase docs fresh with OpenWiki

Credit Genie has adopted OpenWiki, LangChain's open-source repository-documentation agent, to automate the generation and maintenance of docs across its codebase, according to a LangChain report.
Before OpenWiki, the company's AI and ML Engineering teams relied on project-specific Notion pages, README files, and AGENTS.md files. The report states these became stale and hard to find as the teams scaled, and that coding agents also lacked a reliable source of truth about what a repository did or how a subsystem worked. Knowledge became concentrated with individual contributors, creating "tribal knowledge."
The system generates documentation inside each project repository in an openwiki/ folder. OpenWiki runs nightly, checks for commit changes, and opens a pull request when it finds meaningful differences. A GitHub Pages portal aggregates OpenWiki docs across onboarded repositories into a single searchable interface. Onboarding a new repo requires one change in the portal config, which triggers an automated pull request adding a customized OpenWiki GitHub Actions workflow to the target repository.
Credit Genie added an action to automatically approve and merge OpenWiki update PRs, and a sweep job runs daily across onboarded repositories, merges pending updates, and rebuilds the portal. Coding agents are prompted to check the openwiki/ folder before making changes, while team members use the portal to search and read documentation.
The work began as a side project for Mattia Ciollaro, Credit Genie's Head of AI and ML. Reported early gains include faster access to context across repositories, elimination of tribal knowledge, better onboarding, more confident cross-functional conversations, and discoverability through a searchable portal that stays current without manual upkeep.
The next goal is cross-repo awareness: connecting OpenWiki with Credit Genie's internal cross-repository knowledge graph so documentation can show how repositories connect and how changes could affect related systems. The effort is joint with Adil Hashem, Credit Genie's Head of Engineering, and Engineering teams building internal AI tools including LLM gateways, custom CLIs, and GraphRAG code graphs. Credit Genie is described as a mobile-first financial wellness platform.
