Making global data easier to explore

Collected Oct 7, 2026

The United Nations system and Google have launched the UN System Data Commons, an open-source platform built on Data Commons by Google that consolidates global statistics into a single searchable resource called an AI-ready knowledge graph. The announcement was made by Prem Ramaswami, Head of Data Commons at Google, with support from Google.org to the UN Foundation.

Previously, UN statistics were kept in separate silos with conflicting formats across and within different UN system organizations. Connecting them often required months of manual work by data analysts before analysis could begin. The new platform automatically integrates metrics, timelines, and geographic boundaries into one interconnected environment, freeing analysts to focus on identifying trends and designing evidence-based solutions rather than formatting spreadsheets.

The UN System Data Commons uses AI to enable natural-language search. Users can ask plain-language questions such as "How does access to clean water in rural areas affect school attendance?" or "How many people gained access to electricity in the last decade?" and receive relevant data and interactive visualizations. An Explore tab allows filtering by location or themes like health and education, and a Blog section provides reports on complex trends, such as using UNICEF data to examine child poverty reduction. Every dataset is validated with UN system statisticians and technical experts, so answers remain grounded in trusted official facts.

The launch also introduces AI assistant capabilities for research workflows. Built on open standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the platform enables AI agents to autonomously fetch authoritative figures, connect data across domains, and package results into charts, graphs, infographics, or draft reports. The platform cautions that even with verified data, users should review underlying sources before citing critical figures.

Over the coming year, the UN system will continue adding datasets from more UN entities, aiming to include 80% of UN system statistical datasets by 2027. The data is available at data.un.org.

Why it matters: Researchers, journalists, nonprofit program managers, and policy analysts gain instant access to interconnected global statistics through natural-language queries. Developers and product teams can leverage an open-source, AI-ready knowledge graph and MCP-based AI agents to build applications that autonomously retrieve and visualize trusted UN data, with expanded coverage planned through 2027.
