Nikon microscopic video competition winner disqualified for using generative AI

Nikon has disqualified the video that originally took first place in its Small World in Motion competition, saying it "did not comply with the competition rules regarding generative AI," according to The Verge. The BBC reported that the winning entry from Dr. Ning Xu purported to show tiny, hair-like structures called cilia moving in the airway of a child with the respiratory condition PCD.
Nikon said last week it was reviewing the video after skepticism emerged online about its authenticity. In a comment on LinkedIn, Dr. Xu acknowledged using AI in the work, stating that an unsupervised neural-network method was subsequently used for AI-assisted post-processing to distinguish and visualize the structures.
The disqualification is notable because the tool involved was a neural network applied in post-processing rather than a generative model producing imagery from scratch. That distinction may not matter under contest rules, which Nikon says govern generative AI use broadly. The case adds to a growing set of disputes over where AI assistance ends and misrepresentation begins in scientific imaging and photography competitions.
Why it matters: Competition organizers and entrants now face pressure to define and disclose AI use explicitly, particularly in scientific imaging where images are treated as evidence. For researchers and developers working with microscopy or visualization tools, the outcome signals that even analysis-stage AI may trigger eligibility rules, and that disclosure expectations are tightening.
