Monetization Gateway beta: charge AI agents for consumption with HTTP 402

Collected Oct 8, 2026

Cloudflare announced the Monetization Gateway is available in closed beta, three months after first outlining the plan. The Gateway lets domain owners charge agents for access to websites, APIs, MCP tools, or datasets with just a few clicks, and Cloudflare showcased four customers already using it in production.

Sellers write pricing rules that can match any part of a request, including the URL, headers, or query parameters, and choose from several pricing schemes. Cloudflare handles payment verification and settlement through Coinbase's x402 Facilitator, along with failures and retries, analytics, and keeping current with the x402 protocol. Payments settle on the Base blockchain using USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. The Gateway uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code so buyers can offer payment inline with the resource request, without a checkout redirect or a separate payment API. Sellers set which requests require payment, the cost, and where payment is sent; buyers receive instructions, sign an authorization, and get the resource after settlement.

Cloudflare's own AI Gateway now lets U.S.-based Cloudflare customers pay for inference at request time for a select set of models by adding the header PAYMENT-METHOD: x402. Ceramic.ai, which maintains a proprietary index of more than 40 billion pages and returns search results in as little as 50 milliseconds, uses the Gateway's fixed pricing scheme so agents can pay to run a search without an API key. Stocktwits, launched in 2008 and used by more than 10 million people, built a separate agent-facing path for its market signals with the Gateway in front, keeping its existing API and enterprise data products unchanged. API2PDF, a REST API launched in 2018, returns HTTP 402 for requests without an API key and uses variable pricing to state the maximum a request could cost, settling only actual consumption; it previously saw more than 50% drop-off in conversion after customers had to supply a credit card following their first month.

Why it matters: U.S.-based sellers and buyers in the closed beta can now charge or pay agents per request without subscriptions, credits, or API keys for the resources enabled, while new geographies are planned. Developers using Cloudflare AI Gateway can pay for inference at request time for select models by setting the x402 payment header.
