Mistral AI partners with NVIDIA to accelerate open frontier models
Mistral AI announced it is participating as a founding member of the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, described as a global initiative uniting AI labs to advance open, frontier-level foundation models. As part of the partnership, Mistral AI and NVIDIA plan to co-develop frontier open-source AI models, combining Mistral AI's model architecture and full-stack AI platform with NVIDIA's compute resources, model-development tools, and synthetic-data generation pipelines.
Mistral AI said it will contribute proprietary training techniques, multimodal capabilities, and enterprise-grade fine-tuning tools, while leveraging NVIDIA's compute, tools and technologies to scale training and optimization. The company said the partnership builds on prior scientific collaborations with NVIDIA, including development of the Mistral Nemo model.
Mistral AI also announced the release of Mistral Small 4, stating it is intended to let developers, researchers, and organizations build, specialize, and innovate. "Open frontier models are how AI becomes a true platform," said Arthur Mensch, cofounder and CEO of Mistral AI. "Together with NVIDIA, we will take a leading role in training and advancing frontier models at scale. By shaping the capabilities of these systems from the ground up, we can help establish a global foundation for AI that empowers developers to build the next generation of applications."
The coalition's first initiative is a base model, trained on NVIDIA DGX Cloud, which Mistral AI said will underpin the upcoming NVIDIA Nemotron 4 family. These models will be open-sourced, providing a shared foundation for post-training and specialization, according to the company.
As a founding member, Mistral AI said it is contributing large-scale model development and multimodal capabilities, and brings model architectures, expertise in pre-training, post-training and fine-tuning, and experience building specialized, high-efficiency models.
