Command-line tool quickly removes Apple Intelligence from macOS 27

Collected Oct 5, 2026

A developer known on GitHub as Om Lahore last week released RemoveMacAI, a command-line tool that lets macOS 27 users turn off Apple Intelligence. The release responds to a change in macOS 27 Golden Gate, which no longer includes a toggle for disabling Apple Intelligence, leaving the underlying AI models on disk even if the features are unused or individually switched off.

RemoveMacAI shuts down Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension and all summaries, then deletes the models and blocks macOS from downloading them again, according to the developer. Dictation continues to work because it is a separate setting. The developer said the models take up "about 12GB," while The Verge noted they can exceed 30GB. GitHub lists the tool at 1,700 stars, and some Reddit users reported it works.

Mechanically, the tool applies a configuration profile approved in System Settings and uses Apple's own asset service, so System Integrity Protection remains on and nothing in /System is modified directly, the developer explained. A revert command removes the profile, and macOS re-downloads the models when a feature is turned back on. The developer described the process as fully reversible and said users can remove only the Apple Intelligence features they do not want while keeping others.

Reaction on Hacker News compared the tool to de-crufting a new Windows installation, with one user saying third-party scripts are now needed on macOS to regain control of system resources.

Why it matters: Mac users on macOS 27 who want Apple Intelligence off must rely on a third-party command-line tool rather than a built-in setting, and can reclaim disk space that would otherwise hold the models. The tool is open source, fully reversible, and leaves System Integrity Protection enabled.
