Microsoft releases new Nvidia-chip AI PCs with revamped Windows 11

Microsoft announced specs and pricing for new Surface PCs built on Nvidia's RTX Spark chip on Wednesday at an event in San Francisco held during the city's Tech Week. The lineup includes two base models of the Surface Laptop Ultra, starting at $2,600 and $3,700, with configurations that climb as high as $5,900 as buyers add memory and storage. Microsoft said the highest-end device is already out of stock.

Alongside the laptops, Microsoft introduced a workstation called the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, priced from $6,000, preloaded with Microsoft developer tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7. Microsoft first signaled this category in June, when Nvidia said it had agreements with Microsoft and other PC makers to build AI- and agent-ready Windows machines around the RTX Spark chip; machine details were scarce at that point.

The machines are positioned to run AI models locally on-device at no cost, using the CPU, GPU, unified memory and hardware changes such as improved cooling that Microsoft says are needed to handle local models. They ship with a revamped Windows 11 that adds a feature called Execution Containers, which Microsoft says makes sandboxing AI agents easier. CEO Satya Nadella said at the event that Execution Containers will be available to all Windows 11 users.

Nadella said the past three to four years showed that a model alone accomplishes little without orchestration and memory outside the model, describing a layer that combines multiple models with context, memory and an action space. He said Microsoft is enabling that for its own apps and for anyone's agent.

Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 off for people who trade in a MacBook Pro. It also says the Surface PCs can handle content creation, video processing and gaming. Dell announced details of its previously announced Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition on the same day; it is available for pre-order at Best Buy at $3,800 for later October delivery.

Why it matters: Developers and product teams evaluating local AI and agent workloads now have concrete pricing for Nvidia RTX Spark Windows hardware, and the Execution Containers feature will reach all Windows 11 users, not only buyers of these devices.
